Gianni Asdrubali

Gianni Asdrubali is one of the most radical figures in contemporary Italian abstract painting. Since the 1980s, he has developed an artistic practice centred on the pictorial gesture as a spatial event, in a constant tension between mark and surface. His work is driven by movement, impact and energy, rejecting any form of decorative indulgence. The painting becomes a field of action, a dynamic interference between fullness and emptiness, form and anti-form.

He was a leading figure in the group La Nuova Scuola Romana and has exhibited in major international events and institutions, including the Venice Biennale, PAC in Milan and the Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, as well as in galleries across Europe and the United States.

In this powerful multi-panel work, Asdrubali unfolds a form of painting that invades the surrounding space like pure energy, extending beyond the boundaries of the surface. The shaped panels heighten the visual tension. The colour, a deep magenta, emerges as an impulsive, repeated and forceful gesture that struggles against the form while simultaneously multiplying it.

There is no centre and no narrative, but a continuous wave of attraction and repulsion, in which the pictorial mark becomes structure and the artwork turns into a true “spatial machine”. The wall does not contain the work. It is the work that contains the wall. An explosion of painting in expanded form.
