Bosco Sodi

Bosco Sodi is internationally known for his material, chromatically powerful works, which combine pictorial gesture, the alchemy of matter and natural force. After beginnings spent between Mexico, Spain and the United States, he developed a practice centred on the use of pure pigments, powders, volcanic sands and organic materials. His surfaces, often monochrome, are the result of a spontaneous process in which the artist relinquishes part of his control to matter and to time.

For Bosco Sodi, the work is a living body, one that breathes, changes, cracks, and enters into dialogue with space and light. His installations and large circular or rectangular canvases can be found in galleries and museums around the world, including the Fondazione Marconi, the Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City, the Kasmin Gallery and the Fondazione Giorgio Cini.

This circular work from 2020, with its intense red colour and grainy texture, is an emblematic example of Bosco Sodi's poetics. Made with natural pigments and dense, material mixtures, the work presents itself as a telluric, rough, living surface, in constant transformation. The cracks and variations in the matter evoke geological phenomena, organic gestations, time as a natural process.

The vibrant red - a symbol of blood, energy, passion - heightens the visual and sensory impact. The circle, an archetypal, perfect form, holds within it a primordial force, poised between painting and sculpture, between human gesture and the force of the earth.
