Philip Taaffe is one of the most original and sophisticated American artists of his generation. His painting stands out for a layered, ornamental language, weaving together references to Islamic art, classical iconography, psychedelia, tribal art and natural motifs. Emerging from the context of New York postmodernism, Taaffe has built an independent poetics, combining visual intensity with cultural depth.

His works, made using mixed techniques, stencils, silkscreen layering and painterly interventions, are true symbolic maps, in which decoration becomes concept, and visual repetition turns into aesthetic mantra.

Semara is a hypnotic composition in which Philip Taaffe builds a visual score made of overlapping ornamental modules, drawn from arabesque tradition. The repeated forms chase one another in a chromatic symphony of reds, blues, blacks and greens, with subtle transparencies that reveal the complexity of the pictorial layers.
The title - which evokes a woman's name, or perhaps a mystical place - suggests a sense of ritual. The work does not represent but evokes a mental space, a symbolic landscape in which decorative order becomes an expression of spiritual and sensory sensibility.
Taaffe orchestrates the forms with precision and sensuality, revealing a balance between control and intuition, between geometry and flow.

In Window, the artist builds an imaginary window with architectural, sacred features, inspired by Middle Eastern mashrabiya screens or Gothic stained glass. The composition is based on a central geometry, dominated by an eight-pointed star, surrounded by luminous polygons in bright, vibrant colours: red, yellow, turquoise, purple.
The effect is that of a sacred stained-glass window, though broken apart and reworked through material and chromatic layering that heightens its contemplative, hypnotic quality.
As in many of Taaffe's works, decoration becomes a form of visual knowledge and an opening toward the transcendent. Window is a symbolic portal, an invitation to look beyond the surface.
