Botto & Bruno

Both born in 1966, Turin, Italy

The Turin-based artistic duo Botto & Bruno have worked since the 1990s on a visual language that brings together urban architecture, photography and suburban imagery, translating into images the tension between periphery and dream, decay and utopia. Created through mixed media and large-scale installations, their works depict marginal places: empty, grey spaces inhabited by adolescents and contemporary ruins.

Botto & Bruno reinterpret the urban landscape as an emotional stage, constructing narratives suspended between reality and fiction, memory and vision. They have exhibited in major international museums and biennials, including the Venice Biennale, MoMA PS1 in New York and MAXXI in Rome.

This 2005 work depicts an empty and silent urban environment, where a boy seen from behind observes a desolate landscape: a playing field, the remains of a car and a metal fence suggesting isolation. The title, New day is coming, contrasts with the visual melancholy of the scene, opening the work to an ambiguous interpretation suspended between resignation and hope.

The work is emblematic of Botto & Bruno’s artistic language. Photography merges with painted interventions and sharply defined cuts, while the suspended atmosphere captures the invisible emotional dimension of the place. It is an image of waiting, solitude and possibility.
